Meet Nick Mills, one of our Support Officers based at Oak House in Blackpool.
Joining the team in 2018 Nick is an excellent addition. Born in Cambridge he moved to Preston and studied a Degree in Criminology and Sociology between 2012-2016 after which he set his sights on a career in social care.
We recently sat down with Nick to find out a little bit more about what he enjoys about his role at The Ashley Foundation.
Here’s what he had to say…..
What do you most enjoy about your role?
What I enjoy most is being able to help and support people who need it the most. I’m talking about the people who are on the margins of society, those that come to us with little or no hope. It’s difficult to see someone in such a low state, however, it’s extremely rewarding when you seem them overcome their challenges and to know that you’ve had a hand in helping them to achieve their goals.
Every day my role is different and varied, so you never know what you’ll face. I like that I am always learning and with each new resident I face a new set of challenges where I am able to adapt my skills set to make sure that I can offer them the best possible care and support.
What do you look forward to in your role as Support Officer?
Working with people and being one on one with a resident. I enjoy being able to support them through their journey. I’ve always enjoyed working with people, therefore being a support officer seemed to be the obvious choice for me.
What does your role entail?
I meet with our residents daily and during these 1-2-1 sessions, we discuss how they are feeling, what they need and if they have any concerns. Together with our residents, we work on a plan to move forward, but only when they are ready and at a pace to suits them. It’s my job to assess their needs and concerns but I’m also there to give emotional support, empathy and to empower our residents to take back control.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
I enjoy being outdoors it’s one of the reasons I moved to Preston. I wanted to have better access to the North and the Lake District so that I could spend my free time outdoors and what better place to be located. Like most people, I enjoy watching football and boxing too.
